Many years ago now I read in a psychological journal a theory that laughter was a form of social lubricant derived from pattern behaviour in human social functioning. This would stand to reason as infectious laughter is used as a emotional bonding mechanism within in-group societies. Recent research into mirror neurons however suggests that contextually positioned neurons in sensory, motor and emotional regions of the brain can translate the intentions, actions and feelings of other people by observation. This greater understanding of others intentions increases our machiavellian intelligence as well as an increased level of awareness within theory of mind. The mirror neuron hypothesis also predicts that other social behaviours are unconsciously copied to facilitate social bonding, such as yawning or grimace.

Laughter might be a catalyst for spreading awareness and experience and knowledge among individuals, in the same manner like the pleasure of orgasm is the catalyst for reproductive behavior. Those who laugh at someone´s absurd fall or incident are experiencing the pleasure of laughter, while the injured experience the pain. Both will remember and share the experience a lot better, the same as pain makes you remeber and stay aware of something, laughter does that too.
