You move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"922\" height=\"519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RYyNOUYDogI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But offscreen, a darker system has taken root one that exploits labor, undermines democracy, and sells the illusion of progress while accelerating collapse.<a href=\"https:\/\/fair.work\/en\/fw\/blog\/wolts-approach-to-platform-workers-labour-rights-and-strikes\/\"> Wolt,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/latest-news\/greece-hundreds-of-efood-couriers-protest-over-email-calling-drivers-to-work-freelance-or-end-contract\/\">efood,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.publicnow.com\/E300581D9CA4AB3B05A02254B0D10B80454F0539\">Delivery Hero <\/a>don\u2019t just deliver food.<br \/>They deliver inequality, wrapped in branding and driven by algorithms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not innovation.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deliverect.com\/en-ae\/blog\/online-food-delivery\/state-of-the-food-delivery-industry-us-2024\">This is colonization in app form.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Gig Lie<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Call it what it is: <strong>precarity, rebranded.<\/strong><br \/>Couriers aren\u2019t \u201cindependent partners.\u201d They are workers without rights. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/topics\/en\/article\/20190404STO35070\/gig-economy-how-the-eu-improves-platform-workers-rights\">Out of all people working for platforms, 26.3 million (93%) are currently classified as self-employed, but there are suspicions that around five million of those might be misclassified<\/a>.  Employees without protections. Humans rendered disposable by a business model that sees them not as people but as datapoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No health insurance.<br \/>No paid sick leave.<br \/>No labor protections.<br \/>No floor, no ceiling only churn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t the future of work.<br \/>This is the return of the piecework economy Victorian conditions dressed up in UX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Speed Becomes a Weapon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every incentive in this system is structured to <em>de-risk the platform<\/em> by transferring all risk to the worker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You crash your bike? You pay.<br \/>You get sick? No income.<br \/>You protest? You\u2019re deactivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The algorithm doesn\u2019t care if it\u2019s raining, if you\u2019re injured, if you haven\u2019t eaten all day. It optimizes for speed, not survival. And when you are late, you are punished. Not by a human manager, but by a faceless system that auto-throttles your income. It is discipline by design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another era, we called this <strong>automated exploitation<\/strong>.<br \/>Now, we call it the gig economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cities Held Hostage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t just about labor.<br \/>It\u2019s about <em>urban capture<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our streets are increasingly flooded with underpaid workers trying to outrun the algorithm.<br \/>Sidewalks blocked. Accidents rising. Noise, pollution, stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies like Wolt and Delivery Hero externalize the costs of their logistics infrastructure onto cities without paying for the damage.<br \/>They add traffic, increase emissions, and then greenwash their way out with vague promises about sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just unfair. It\u2019s parasitic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accountability Laundering<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear: when your food is cold, late, or never arrives, there is no one to call.<br \/>Platforms have built <strong>responsibility voids<\/strong>\u2014legal and emotional. They point fingers at couriers or restaurants while hiding behind terms of service and automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one is responsible. No one is reachable.<br \/>Just bots, emails, and endless loops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a glitch. It is the model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When the Market Becomes a Monolith<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoganlovells.com\/en\/publications\/table-for-none-european-commission-serves-fines-for-labor-market-cartel\">, Delivery Hero and Glovo <\/a>were fined for forming a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debevoise.com\/insights\/publications\/2025\/06\/first-ever-european-commission-fine-for-no-poach\">cartel<\/a>\u2014colluding to eliminate competition and control prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not surprising.<br \/>This is what happens when platforms scale without checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They squeeze local restaurants with high commissions. They replace community-based ecosystems with vertical monopolies. And they do it all while masquerading as friendly middlemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t market disruption.<br \/>It\u2019s <strong>corporate colonization<\/strong>\u2014a slow bleed of independence, masked as convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Rides for Your Convenience?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mostly immigrants. Mostly men. Extractive. Unsustainable.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we allow the gigification of work to continue unchecked, then the rights we still cling to paid leave, safety nets, dignity\u2014will soon vanish for us too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What was done to couriers yesterday is being beta-tested for all of us tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resist the normalization. Demand regulation. Protect labor.
