Let\u2019s start with the punchline: in Greece, if you\u2019re a minister, you don\u2019t fear prison. You fear losing your parking spot in Kolonaki. That\u2019s because our Constitution \u2014 yes, the sacred text<\/a> \u2014 hides a clause so absurd it would make Kafka blush and Carlin howl. It\u2019s called Article 86<\/strong>,<\/a> and it\u2019s the single best insurance policy for politicians who want to lie, steal, or screw up catastrophically without consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Joke That Isn\u2019t Funny<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Article 86 basically says: only Parliament can prosecute ministers for crimes they commit while in office. Sounds democratic, right? Wrong. It\u2019s like asking the foxes to investigate who ate the chickens. And surprise: they always vote that nobody did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about the Tempe rail disaster \u2014<\/a> fifty-seven dead. Contracts signed, safety systems delayed, money evaporated. Who faced justice? No one at the top. Or the TEXAN recycling scandal <\/a>\u2014 millions lost, a company under investigation, but political names safely cocooned. Or the OPEKEPE farm subsidies<\/a> that never reached farmers \u2014 because Article 86 doesn\u2019t allow prosecutors to knock on certain doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you kill people with negligence, cheat the system, or siphon EU money, you and I risk prison. Ministers? They risk a bad headline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s not democracy. That\u2019s is mafia code designed to escape crimes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This wasn\u2019t an accident. Article 86 was designed by elites for elites.<\/strong> It\u2019s the ultimate firewall, a built-in feature of the Greek state: a rule that makes accountability optional. Every time the clause was challenged, parties closed ranks. Left, right, center \u2014 all complicit, because all benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It turns law into theater. Trials are rare, convictions even rarer. The few who are prosecuted end up in a \u201cSpecial Court,\u201d which sounds grand until you realize it\u2019s staffed by politicians\u2019 peers and has the lifespan of a fruit fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is how systems maintain themselves: not through secret cabals in smoke-filled rooms, but through clauses hidden in plain sight<\/strong> that make justice impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cost in Blood <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We talk about corruption as if it\u2019s just money. But look at Tempe: fifty-seven families burying their children. Look at underfunded hospitals while subsidies vanish. Look at farmers crushed while middlemen pocket their aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not just theft. This is violence against citizens. When ministers are untouchable, citizens become disposable<\/strong>.<\/a> Article 86 is not abstract; it is written in coffins and unpaid bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who protects the people, when the law protects the powerful?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here\u2019s the scam:<\/strong> the Constitution protects politicians, politicians protect each other, and citizens protect\u2026 nothing. We get to vote every four years and pretend it matters, while Article 86 laughs in our faces.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

George Carlin once said: \u201cIt\u2019s a big club. And you ain\u2019t in it.\u201d<\/em> Article 86 is Greece\u2019s version of that club. The rest of us? We\u2019re the punchline, paying the tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Public Prosecutor Laura Kovesi came to Athens and said it straight: Article 86 is standing in the way.<\/em><\/a> She\u2019s right. And while politicians argue whether to touch the holy Constitution, citizens keep dying, paying, and waiting.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let\u2019s stop pretending this is normal. Article 86 is not tradition. It\u2019s not law. It\u2019s a crime scene dressed up as democracy<\/strong>. And until it\u2019s gone, Greece will keep burying its victims under the weight of its own impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
