Thinkers and engineers spoke of a digital enlightenment \u2014 algorithms as allies in healing the planet. Imagine it: precision medicine, fairer economics, universal access to creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as the dust cleared, the dream morphed into something grotesque.<br \/>Instead of ending poverty, we got apps that amplify vanity.<br \/>Instead of curing disease, we got filters that cure boredom.<br \/>Instead of a machine for liberation, we got a factory for manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI did not evolve to <em>understand us.<\/em><br \/>It evolved to <em>persuade us.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The new language of control<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT exploded in 2022, the world gasped. A machine that could talk, write, and reason!<br \/>It felt like the beginning of something magnificent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the fine print arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/05\/30\/g-s1-1670\/openai-influence-operations-china-russia-israel\">2024, OpenAI itself confirmed that governments \u2014 including Israel, Russia, China, and Iran \u2014 were using ChatGPT in <strong>covert influence operations<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><br \/>Chatbots were writing fake posts, creating digital personas, pushing political talking points.<br \/>Not fringe trolls \u2014 <em>state-level campaigns.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that wasn\u2019t the scandal. Millions of users. Infinite scroll. Every frame synthetic. Every smile programmable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But within days, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/04\/openai-sora-violence-racism\"><em>The Guardian<\/em> documented Sora\u2019s dark side:<\/a><br \/>AI-generated videos showing bombings, racial violence, fake news clips, fabricated war footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A flood of <em>emotional realism<\/em> \u2014 not truth, but truth-shaped seduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe guardrails,\u201d one researcher said, \u201care not real.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Even worse, states and PR agencies began experimenting with Sora to \u201ctest audience sentiment.\u201d<br \/>Not to inform.<br \/>To engineer emotional response at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Propaganda used to persuade through words.<br \/>Now it possesses through images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The addiction loop<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If ChatGPT was propaganda\u2019s pen, Sora 2 is its theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On Tuesday, OpenAI<\/strong>\u00a0released an AI video app called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-launches-sora-2-tiktok-like-app\/\">Sora<\/a>. The platform is powered by OpenAI\u2019s latest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-sora-video-generator-bias\/\">video generation model<\/a>, Sora 2, and revolves around a TikTok-like For You page of user-generated clips. This is the first product release from OpenAI that adds AI-generated sounds to videos. So if you think TikTok is addictive you can imagine how more addictive this will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br \/>Together they form a full-stack influence engine: one writes your worldview, the other shows it to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OpenAI backer Vinod Khosla called critics \u201celitist\u201d and told people to \u201clet the viewers judge this slop.\u201d<br \/>That\u2019s the logic of every empire built on attention: if it keeps you scrolling, it\u2019s working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI promised <em>freedom from work.<\/em><br \/>What it delivered is <em>work for attention.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same dopamine design that made TikTok irresistible is now welded to generative propaganda.<br \/>Every scroll, every pause, every tiny flick of your thumb trains the system to tailor persuasion to <em>your psychology.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t need to change your mind.<br \/>It just needs to keep you from leaving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ai chatbots took aways your critical thinking this will  rot your brain in the same way TikTok does only worse<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong> The moral inversion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early AI manifestos, engineers dreamed of eliminating inequality, curing disease, saving the planet.<br \/>But building empathy algorithms doesn\u2019t pay as well as building engagement loops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the smartest minds of our century stopped chasing truth \u2014 and started optimizing addiction.<br \/>The promise of <em>Artificial Intelligence<\/em> devolved into <em>Artificial Intimacy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lie is always the same:<br \/>\u201cThis is for connection.\u201d<br \/>But the outcome is always control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The human cost<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2024\/1\/17\/gideon_levy_israel_gaza\">Gideon Levy, chronicling Gaza\u2019s digital frontlines, said it bluntly:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe same algorithms that sell sneakers now sanitize occupation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While real people bury their children, AI systems fabricate smiling soldiers and \u201cbalanced\u201d stories   replacing horror with narrative symmetry.<br \/>The moral wound isn\u2019t just in what\u2019s shown.<br \/>It\u2019s in what\u2019s erased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A generation raised on algorithmic empathy learns to feel without acting  to cry, click, and scroll on. Is this  how our world would be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The reckoning<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The tragedy of AI isn\u2019t that it became powerful.<br \/>It\u2019s that it became <em>predictable.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every civilization has dreamed of gods. We built one  and gave it a marketing job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this technology had been aimed at eradicating hunger, curing cancer, ending exploitation, the world might have shifted toward light, everyone would be happier<br \/>Instead, it\u2019s monetizing illusion, weaponizing emotion, and rewiring truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI didn\u2019t fail us by mistake.<br \/>It succeeded <em>exactly as designed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong> <\/strong>The question is no longer <em>what can AI do?<\/em><br \/>It\u2019s <em>who does AI serve?<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it serves capital, it will addict us.<br \/>If it serves power, it will persuade us.<br \/>If it serves truth, it will unsettle us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it will only serve humanity if we demand that it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because right now, the greatest minds in history aren\u2019t building tools to end suffering  they\u2019re building toys that make us forget  how much we suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI was supposed to awaken us.<br \/>Instead, it learned to lull us back to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next Enlightenment will begin when we remember that technology is never neutral  and neither is silence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was meant to cure poverty.
