This experimental animation by Max Hattler approaches Hong Kong’s built environment from the conceptual perspective of celluloid film, by applying the technique of film animation to the photographic image. The city’s signature architecture of horizon-eclipsing housing estates is reimagined as parallel rows of film strips: Serial Parallels.

Blip is a short 2D animation that explores the topic of digital addiction, an issue increasing year by year and especially during the pandemic lockdown. In an exaggerated style, the animation portrays the experience of isolation and distraction many people share today with frequent use of digital technology.

“It felt like stepping into a totally different world and I remember my first time going up on stage and literally shaking. I mean, I was dancing naked in front of strangers for the first time and I’d never been so vulnerable before. I loved it. I got really close with the other girl who worked there. They supported me and showed me that at the club those rules I learned growing up about being feminine meant being quiet and delicate and modest didn’t apply here. It was exhilarating.”
